8th Grade Farewell Dance

School Chromebooks

Please help remind your students to take good care of our school chromebooks.  We have had many chromebooks damaged throughout the year because students are not treating them well.  Recently, we have also become aware of a TikTok trend encouraging students to stick pencil lead and other objects into the chromebooks to get them to smoke or catch on fire.  This is extremely dangerous and also against our code of conduct so please help discourage this behavior.  

8th Grade Color Run and Cookout

We are very excited to be hosting our first ever 8th grade Color Run and Cookout.  This is an event being organized by two groups of 8th grade students for the Impact Project (with the support of DMS/DHS adults).

The items for the color run are being graciously donated by the high school. 

We are in need of donations for the cookout that will follow the run. We are also in need of adult volunteers.  The event is planned for Monday June 2nd, from 2:45-5:00 pm following the 8th grade awards ceremony. 

Students do not have to run in the event to attend the cookout. They can come and cheer on their peers and then join in for some food, outdoor games and music to celebrate afterwards. 

Please review the available slots below and click on any you are able to help provide.  Follow up arrangements will be made for item drop-off, but we will need the items at DMS by May 30th.

STUDENT MATERIAL DROP OFF

One of our goals at DeWitt Middle School is to help students to become more independent and accountable. A major part of that is helping students to be ready to learn with all materials for school and extracurricular activities. While we understand that there may be an occasional need to drop off a forgotten homework paper, or lunch, we are hoping we can work together to greatly reduce or eliminate other items being dropped off.

Deliveries of special meals, water bottles, treats, sports apparel or equipment and other items are becoming more and more frequent and causing a disruption to instructional time, as well as the responsibilities of office staff. In terms of homework, books, Chromebooks, etc, we are encouraging students to become more independent and accountable and to come to school prepared, or recognize natural consequences when they are not. Your help in reducing the number of items being dropped off is greatly appreciated.

Requirements for Seminar Olympics Participation

Middle School Students and Adults: 

As we continue to support our students’ growth this spring, we believe that part of this is setting fair expectations and supporting students to meet those expectations.  At the end of the year, we have our Seminar Olympics planned as a fun celebration during the last few days of school.  To help all of our students, we have developed academic and behavior standards that students need to meet in order to participate in Seminar Olympics:

• Academic standard - Students must be passing five out of six classes one week prior to the event.  A grades report will be run on Wednesday, May 28th to determine eligibility for Seminar Olympics.  Any grade below a D- is not considered passing.

• Behavior standard - Students must have three or less behavior referrals during the third trimester.  A final report of referrals will be run on Wednesday, May 28th.      

Our goal is for all of our students to participate in our Seminar Olympics event.  As a way to further support students to reach the academic goal, a grades report will be run at the middle of the trimester (Friday, April 18th).  Students who are not meeting the criteria will be able to work with a teacher to set a specific goal of improvement, which would allow them to participate.  Individual needs will also be taken into consideration when determining academic or behavior eligibility. We look forward to partnering with you to help our students be successful during this last trimester!

Assistance Programs

The Old Newsboys Association helps our community by providing school-age children with either shoes or boots. If your child needs new shoes or boots and the purchase of them would be a financial burden, please fill out this form indicating your interest in this program and we will reach out for additional enrollment information. Once the sign-up process is complete, Old Newsboys Association will send you a voucher for either shoes or boots. You may include all school age children on one family request, even if they attend different schools. Please do not send in duplicate requests if you included your child on another form.  (If you are unable to fill out the digital form, please contact us for further assistance.)

The Weekend Survival Kit Backpack Program will continue to be provided at Dewitt Middle School this year.  Weekend Survival Kits contain a little over two days’ worth of food. Typical food items include mac & cheese, granola bars, canned vegetables, peanut butter, crackers, oatmeal, soup, and SpaghettiOs / Ravioli. There is no cost to you to participate in this program.  There are NO eligibility requirements to participate in this program this year. All students/families can access this program if they would like to! To enroll in this program, please fill out this form indicating your interest. Typically, food kits would be sent home from school with your student on Fridays.
